In a recent feature, David St Martin, VP of Supplier Operations, shares how The Opus Group approaches freelancer certification in a shifting regulatory landscape.

The Opus Group was recently featured in an article by Skift Meetings on the increased scrutiny of temporary labor in the events industry.

The piece explains how federal and state enforcement, along with pressure from contractors themselves, is prompting agencies to reevaluate their talent classification. As demand for flexible staffing grows, so does the complexity of balancing compliance, cost, and competitiveness.

“Freelancers are classified as temporary employees by default, shifting to contractor status only when criteria are clearly met,” shares David. "If the role falls outside our usual course of business, the individual is classified as a contractor. Otherwise, we evaluate factors such as tax status, state laws, and scope of work to determine proper classification."

The article also covers broader industry dynamics, like federal guidance, state-level regulations, and recent legal cases that signal increased enforcement across hospitality.

As agencies navigate the changes, the focus shifts toward more deliberate workforce strategies, an area where The Opus Group continues to take a proactive approach.
